Doing just enough in Splat Zones (12-3, Tri-slosher)

15th February 2017 – 7.00 pm

I can get to the Tower in Blackbelly Skatepark quickly, and I think that should serve me well in Splat Zones, particularly with a Tri-slosher. But my ink doesn't quite slosh down on the Roller coming up, and it's a Carbon Roller, so I get splatted pretty quickly. I should practice with that inker more.

My flanking route doesn't seem to get my any joy to start with, but I get around the back unscathed, and even though I don't get immediate splats I am able to apply enough pressure to move the inklings around. And it doesn't take too long before my splat count gets going.

I do a few circuits of the Skatepark, inking a path, getting a splat, avoiding a splat, inking the Splat Zones, and back around again. This goes on for an excellent amount of time too! At one point I do a 180 to try to fake-out the Splat-cam. I wonder if that works.

Just for a change, I go the opposite direction, going backwards along our own flanking route, making a figure-of-eight, I suppose. Even with my Bubbler charged and my reactions working when surrounded by yellow inklings, I come out of a good-looking situation with no splats. But I move on to get one anyway.

Of course, it's the Carbon Roller that eventually splats me. That's okay, I've used it before, and it's not as easy as it looks. And with only seconds remaining, we are able to hang on to our slim lead, and I get one last splat, on the Carbon Roller. Woomy!

Ups and downs in Tower Control (12-10, Blaster)

15th February 2017 – 7.00 am

I enjoy the Tri-slosher and Splatterscope so much I forget that the Blaster can work well in Tower Control. I sometimes remember, though, and tonight I give the Blaster an outing. I use its explosive ink to bag a couple of splats at the start, although ink from above gets me too.

I try to flank, as I always do, but the range of the Blaster catches me out a lot of the time. Not really knowing where the purple inklings are doesn't help either. I know where they are when I return. They're nearly all on the Tower. It would be perfect, but the shields are up! It's a trap!

Each splat lets me ink an arm of our base, which is something. And when my Killer Wail charges as another is let loose, I cut mine across the other, bagging one splat immediately, and another a second later. Nice! I continue my flanking move and surprise a couple of inklings, whilst a squidmate forces one in to the water. It's looking good, particular as more inklings are splatted.

My attempt to ride the Tower goes poorly. That .96 Gal is the bane of my battle, though, as she shows seconds later again. I take an alternative route to keep the high ground, and help save our lead, also making a daring jump on to the Tower to push it back. It doesn't go too far.

My strategy to go around the back of the Tower works better when I manoeuvre better, and flopping against the wall is only saved by resorting to my Killer Wail. I clear the purple inklings, but not in time to save our lead.

My desire to go the long way continues, and it looks like my mojo is gone. I stand and shoot at air, then dash in to purple ink. Never mind, I had a good battle overall.

Some good splatting in Splat Zones (11-3, Splatterscope)

14th February 2017 – 7.00 pm

I find out in a previous battle that my perch isn't quite as safe from a dedicated Octobrush as I would like. That won't stop me from using it, but in this battle I aim to be a bit more mobile, attempting to hold the centre ground but covering more of the Splat Zones.

The main problem is probably the moving platform, which I occasionally have to avoid and work around, but it also protects me a bit, so I don't really mind. My first splat is good, if not as difficult as it might have been. A small puddle of ink is not a great place to hide.

I manage to avoid a Splat Bomb whilst not wasting my own Splat Bomb Rush only by walking in to the start of a Killer Wail, which I also manage to avoid, but when the purple ink rains down on my there's nowhere else for me to go.

There seems to be trouble from the side, with an inkling lobbing the occasional Splat Bomb over the top, but I've learnt to mostly ignore that. In this case, I realise that climbing on to the middle of our big platform is probably a good place for me to be. I get up there and make the most of my vantage point.

I don't hit two squids next to each other, but I stop the one running across the bridge. I miss a jump squid, but that's okay, as Echolocator is my friend, as is lady luck seconds afterwards. And now we're back in control.

Some inkling tries to use his Killer Wail against me. I fall off my perch, but get my own back with a Splat Bomb Rush, that gets an additional splat when I turn my attention to the Splat Zones. I splat the Killer Wailer again, and he turns his attention towards me again with another Killer Wail shortly afterwards.

Dodging down, I have to improvise again. I don't make my close shots and am forced backwards, but the Kraken doesn't chase me down. A Disruptor looks to end my run, though, but a nifty shot relieves some pressure, and a Splat Bomb Rush charges at just the right moment to ignore being Disrupted.

I foolishly expect the Octobrush to drop down to engage me, but he's in a much better position and unsurprisingly doesn't come down. I turn my attention away from him eventually, and return to the Splat Zones. I last a good long time down on the ground, but nothing lasts forever and I get cornered and doomed to a splatting.

Evading the Kraken looked like it was going well, and it's disappointing that two of us couldn't splat the inkling at the end, but never mind. A short time left of not losing the Splat Zones, and we get ourselves the victory.

Flying splats in Splat Zones (7-3, Splatterscope)

14th February 2017 – 7.00 am

I found my Splatterscope Splat Zones spot on Museum d'Alfonsino the other day, and I'm going to use it again today. It's useful because I can cover over half the Splat Zone whilst keeping relatively safe, and aware of the main assault channel.

I can't quite stay up where it's safest, as a rival charger is covering over my ink as quickly as I can shoot it. I drop down and get a good splat on the other charger, without getting splat back. A second splat immediately afterwards is just excellent.

I try to keep the green team from making an significant advance, along with my squidmates, but they come and we can't stop them forever. I get a good shot at a jumping brush, though. I get forced off the perch after that, and from there I corner myself, and my splatting is inevitable.

Back to my favoured perch, and to inking the Splat Zones. My opposite charger is in a similar position on the other side of the map, and I don't feel quite so inclined to go after her at this point. Just keep inking what I can, as there's no need to chase splats.

I keep wary of any green inklings trying to cross over the map, and getting another excellent splat of a flying squid. I miss the next one, but you can't hit them all. Well, I cant. Even so, after a couple more misses I get another excellent splat of an inkling crossing the bridge. I'm stopped this time by being surrounded by Suction Bombs. Not much you can do about that.

I would have liked to have splatted the Sploosh encroaching on my perch, but my reactions aren't quite quick enough. That's okay, as we still have more control of the Splat Zones, which continues for the short remaining period of the battle.

A little flustered in th Splat Zones (10-5, Tri-slosher)

13th February 2017 – 7.00 pm

My jumping lunge at the confidently close charger doesn't quite work, with only one slosh hitting. At least when I squid right back up I manage to get the splat, as it would have been embarrassing to miss completely. I still have to start again, though, as I don't quite evade the green ink flying overhead.

I manage to chase the Splattershot successfully too, another relief for the sake of my competence, and although my Bubbler is popped in a bit of a panic it's not such a bad time. I don't have it when I maybe need it, as an inkling drops down from the highest wall, but I use the block and my slosher well to keep safe.

I don't quite get the Splatterscope again, but again my sloshing bails me out. That's quite appropriate, in fact. A bit of teamwork pushes the green team back a distance, and we're left with holding comfortably the Splat Zones for a bit. Not for quite long enough, and maybe I should have pushed forwards instead of being comfortable.

Never mind, we can battle over the Splat Zones a bit more, and I use the elevation changes on Flounders Heights to my benefit again, taking advantage of a charged Bubbler to good effect. But I get a bit mired up after that, with ink coming at me from all angles, and I can't quite escape.

The next time we're comfortable, thanks to another combined push, I press forwards a bit. I get a small reward for doing so, but spot the super-jump ring a bit too late, and then miss the Splatterscope diving behind me. By the time I turn around, I have a laser sight on me. Never mind!

I evade some Bubblers nicely, thanks to long drops available down from the Splat Zones, and come up to wreak some inky revenge. And despite running out of ink, I recover just enough to get one last splat on the Splatterscope. Woomy!

Splatty confusion in Splat Zones (12-8, Tri-slosher)

13th February 2017 – 7.00 am

Flounder Heights, my favourite! But Splat Zones, my not-so favourite. I'll pick the bucket anyway, and hope the Tri-slosher will inspire me to be good. Or I'll run headlong in to trouble as always. At least I Disrupted someone!

Holy crap, the Inkstrike is in the air as I have already started to super-jump. I don't know how I didn't get splatted immediately. But I shake it off and get back to inking. I like to make use of the excellent design of Flounders Heights, and dropping through the grate to come right back up feels good, and even better getting the splat from it.

Unintentionally falling down isn't so good, but you roll with things, and I see what I can find on the ground of the purple team's patch. Inklings! More than one! It's good that my Bubbler is charged. I try hide a bit, even with an Echolocator on me, and really am that surprised when the Octobrush doesn't splat me. I stand stunned, fully expecting to see who splatted me, before realising I won and getting on with things.

I push further forwards and up on to the normal perch, getting a decent splat and taking the sensible step of squidding over the side away from danger. Up to the top and try to keep the Splat Zones inked. But they already are, which only gets me in to trouble, somehow.

Facing Bubblers has my squidding away, again quite sensibly, and returning with my own Bubbler! Haha! But it gets messy. At least messy and splatted is better than walking over a Splat Bomb and not noticing until it's too late. Oops.

I take an alternative route to the top when I sense danger, and manage to rain ink down on the brush, whilst my squidmates take care of the Splat Zone. I squid across and, with a charged Bubbler again, take care of the other Splat Zone. But I stupidly chase the Octobrush, thinking that because she's Disrupted I'll be victorious. Nope.

Getting side-splatted is a little ignominious, more so from a Splattershot Jr. It looks like I don't even have time to get my revenge, although my squidmates manage to push the battle in to extra time. We try our best to hold the Splat Zones, but the other team have done a good job of keeping the lead so far, and continue to do so.

Causing trouble around the Splat Zones (14-6, Tri-slosher)

12th February 2017 – 7.00 pm

An Octobrush, Rapid Blaster, and Luna Blaster on the other team spell trouble for me and my Tri-slosher. But I know how to wield a bucket, so hopefully I'll be okay. I get underneath the brush to start with, more by his efforts than mine, but the Rapid Blaster catches me from behind. So it goes.

I head across the bridge, taking the side wall as my preferred route, and climb higher, hoping that will help me. It does, and until the Rapid Blaster turns up I can stay up there, and when it does turn up I can use my Bubbler. Splatting the brush as well is just a nice bonus.

I try to use my Disruptor to the fullest, rather than mostly forgetting about it. But how about that jump at 2'15"? Right across the gap, and in to a Bomb Rush in progress. To be fair, many inklings don't want to waste their special, so I was relatively safe, but getting across that gap and getting the splat was fabulous.

I miss out on the Inkstrike inkling, and then slosh down form above ineffectively. I should do better. So I make another good jump and splat the Rapid Blaster again, and follow that up by, well, almost doing quite well, but at least I keep a couple of inklings occupied.

Another great jump across the gap, this time needing to ink the path as I go. I'm getting better at this. But the Rapid Blaster is there again. On my next pass, I have to jump on to the bridge, and whilst I'm there it seems like a better idea to ink the Splat Zones. I survive a brush with the Luna Blaster, and dive away from a Splat Bomb, and cross to the other side.

We lose the Splat Zones, so I turn back, but we get them again, so I turn back the way I was going. Good, because my Bubbler is ready, and here come some inklings. I Disrupt the Rapid Blaster, splat the Splattershot gunning for me, and am in time to catch the Disrupted Blaster for seconds. Nice!

We've lost the Splat Zones, though. But we have a good lead, and my squidmates are on it. I go back for more disruption, going high to surprise one inkling, dropping behind another, and head back to the Splat Zones as they turn yellow to force us in to extra time. I drop down and pop my Bubbler just in time to prevent my getting splatted, and get the splat instead, turning the Zones purple to end the match in our favour. Woomy!

Causing disruption in Splat Zones (15-8, Tri-slosher)

12th February 2017 – 7.00 am

Splat Zones with Museum d'Alfonsino. My Tri-slosher should be okay here, both for sloshing from below, from above, and for skirmishing beyond the Splat Zones, which is what I enjoy the most.

My first attempt stops abruptly, but that's only to be expected at the start of the battle. My second goes rather well, particularly considering the opponents watching me cross the gap.

I decide to loiter here for a bit, as this side of the map takes a bit of getting to, and some risk. Of course, staying here has some associated risks, and I tend to ignore the Splat Zones, but if I can keep some opponents occupied for a bit, hopefully my squidmates will be under less pressure to ink the Zones.

I move down when I spy a suitable splat, which I get nicely, and turn right back around. Nice! I apply a bit more pressure, with some help from a timely Bubble, before getting sent back to the base.

Ooh, so close with that jump! I thought I could make it. In fact, the middle part of this battle could be mostly ignored as mostly throwing myself in to poor situations, albeit with a few splats of my own.

But with under a minute to go, I find my feet again, bridging the gap to surprise the two chargers, and continue behind-the-lines to cause more disruption and help keep the Splat Zones ours in extra time. I like to think I helped a bit.

Holding my own in the Splat Zones (8-4, Splatterscope)

11th February 2017 – 7.00 pm

When the Kelp Splatterscope splats me from that jump I could never make, I think my number's up, and this battle is over. It doesn't stop me from trying, but I am now quite wary of my distance.

At least my Splatterscope allows me the benefit of shooting to cover some of the Splat Zones from a safe distance. It's not enough if we want to win the battle, but it should slow down the other team's counter, which is something.

But switching positions and spying the other Splatterscope lets me get a really nice shot off, which both releases some of the pressure, and gives me some confidence.

With the new confidence, I manage to mostly hold my position, snap off some nice shots, and ink a fair bit of the Splat Zones. Dodging the Killer Wail was nice, just about having room at the edge, and a nice opportunistic shot after that gets me a cool splat.

From what looked like it would be a romping, we get back in to the battle quite nicely. It even looks like we might turn it around in to our favour! The purple team fight well, though, and when a Splattershot comes right around to flank me it's perhaps game over.

I'm glad I hit that Roller running up the grating on the first go. Sometimes I can aim, it seems, and this is one of those times. It's not a win for the team, but it's a great boost for me.

Mistakes were made in Rainmaker (7-9, Splatterscope)

11th February 2017 – 7.00 am

Two shots needed to hit a stationary inkling. Not my finest hour. At least the Splattershot splats me, not the Rainmaker shield, although I was hoping that my Splat Bomb Rush would explode the shield a bit quicker.

I somehow avoid the Kraken, despite my realising a bit late that there really is only one place I could be, what with it being the start of the battle and there being almost no ink around. Still, I count my blessings, and then my splats. That worked out quite well.

I support my advancing squidmates, which goes okay, but the Squiffer catches me around a corner to stop our shenanigans completely. Super-jumping back may not be the best idea, but there's a chance it will work, and the Rainmaker is close to the podium. It doesn't work.

I try to find a good place to provide support, but it seems to be a better place for the Luna Blaster. I then manage to activate my Splat Bomb Rush, hoping to clear a path before grabbing the Rainmaker, but grab the Rainmaker by mistake. I panic and make a beeline for not where I currently am, and get surprisingly far!

That Rainmaker carry went well, I think I'll give it another go. Oh, right, that inflatable is purposely in my way. Well, I can go under and over. Or I could, if I remembered to become a kid sooner. Slightly embarrassingly, I abandon my squidmates and head in the other direction, and it goes about as well as can be expected.

I redeem myself slightly with an excellent Rainmaker splat, even if me and the Inkzooka just toy with each other afterwards. As we enter extra time, I try to add my support, but fall through that same grate again, hilariously in to a Kraken. Not my best battle. Could do better. As a result, I drop out of S Rank once more.
