Bucketing splats in Squad Splat Zones (11-2, Tri-slosher)

11th April 2017 – 7.00 pm

I'm a duo squad for a bit, having been invited by AceThunder. I started with the Carbon Roller Deco, but seeing my squadmate opt for the Tri-slosher encourages me to swap over too. I show some good sense to start with, chucking a Disruptor ahead of me to slow a purple inkling and not immediately charging in for the splat. They will still be shooting ink for a bit.

Instead, I back off and gain some height, always good for the Tri-slosher, and get a couple of splats raining ink from above. I'm also caught from below, through the grate, but such is the battle over and around the Splat Zones. And beyond the Splat Zones, apparently.

Naturally, holding the turf past the Splat Zones often means the Splat Zones themselves will remain secure, and having to battle through a spearhead can be tricky. I bide my time, squidding on a wall for a bit, before pressing forwards, Bubbler ready. The purple inklings are prepared, though, and fall back, Inkzooka ready.

I know when I'm beaten, and squid through the grate to try a different approach. The Inkzooka is looking elsewhere, and gets splatted by that elsewhere, and his buddy is splatted by my reappearance from below. A pause to refill my ink, and I'm sloshing over the Splat Zones, which we capture. Nice!

Now to press forwards ourselves. I spy an inkling coming my way, and am ready for the splat. I have to divert, as a lack of inkable blocks stops me going forwards, and I join a squidmate in the middle of the bridge. He pushed further ahead, relying on a Splash Wall, whereas I just lob a Disruptor forwards.

I survive long enough to throw a second Disruptor, and seeing that hits lets me drop down to the side to ink some turf. I return to the centre of the bridge in time to see the Disrupted inkling back to full speed, but now I have a Bubbler ready. That worked out pretty well!

Back to the side, as a new purple path has been made, and I drop down on an inkling trying to cover my tracks. I think we surprise each other, and only my Tri-slosher's side-spray lets me hold the advantage. The Splat Zones are purple again, though, and I take a rather indirect route back to help recover them.

It's difficult to focus on the Splat Zones and inkling threats at the same time, but I suppose that's the challenge. I choose to focus on splats again for a bit, which seems to pay off quite well for me and the team, as we control the Splat Zones again, and I surprise an Inkzooka from behind. In the end, it's a comfortable victory for us.

Carbon Roller double squish in Splat Zones (10-4, Carbon Roller Deco)

11th April 2017 – 7.00 am

Phew, I move just in time when lurking behind that wall. I don't want to rush in to being splatted, but I want to ink the Splat Zones. When nothing happens I push forwards, just as a Killer Wail starts to form around me. I must be feeling lucky, because rounding a corner and flicking some ink bags me a splat too.

Completing the circuit doesn't capture the Splat Zones, but I splat a Slosher on the grate above me. I back away from another Slosher and start throwing Seekers everywhere, having to avoid a yellow one myself. And back to lurking, as we control the Splat Zones and I look for the next opportunity.

Here it comes. I get rid of a pesky Sprinkler and see a Dynamo Roller head around the side. I wait, pounce, and get my splat. Nice! Even nice, rolling ahead finds what I think is another inkling, who I somehow manage to squish, but is in fact TWO other inklings who I somehow manage to squish. I'm not even mad that I get splatted back.

A bit of patrolling doesn't quite go to plan. I don't ink the wall well enough to squid up, I don't splat an inkling I happen upon, and I somehow don't splat the Dynamo Roller that super-jumps in front of me. Never mind, keep doing what I'm doing, and the splats will come.

A Seeker Rush doesn't get any splats, but it covers a lot of turf, and we regain control of the Splat Zones nicely. And I spy a target. But she hunkers down pretty well to avoid my short-range attention whilst launching an Inkstrike, and the best I can do is get us both splatted.

The Dynamo Roller picks a poor moment to set up the Killer Wail, and is ganged up on to be splatted. But there is a lot of yellow ink now, enough for me to get bogged down chasing a Slosher, and stuck enough to be sloshed from behind. I think it was a different Slosher.

I go back to lurking, with the occasional Seeker, but easily get tempted back to hunting. But I regret it immediately when a Kraken appears next to me. I avoid the Kraken, but a super-jumping squidmate may be a target, so I stick nearby to help out, until an Inkstrike lands on me. I try to abort, but have a Slosher behind me, and run in to a Dynamo Roller. It's dangerous out there.

Here we go. Splatting a Slosher at range, getting a Seeker Rush for turf coverage and a splat, and avoiding the attentions of a yellow inkling or two. It's like I know what I'm doing. And the battle is pretty much decided when a puff of yellow smoke appears next to me, signalling the disappearance of an inkling. I think we had it in the bag by that point anyway. Woomy!

Squishy revenge in Tower Control (11-8, Carbon Roller Deco)

10th April 2017 – 7.00 pm

That E-litre 3K could prove to be trouble for us in Tower Control in Museum d'Alfonsino, and for me in particular with my short-range Carbon Roller Deco. It would be nice if he didn't prove it within seconds of the battle starting, though.

In a move that suggests personal progress, I don't rush back along the same route to get embroiled in a false feud, and instead try to assess the situation a bit. Whilst spending some time sitting right in the sights of the E-litre 3K, admittedly. I realise eventually.

It seems the best I can do is launch the occasional Seeker. It's not much, but it means I don't get splatted quite so quickly. We also find out who is the more patient Carbon Roller. Back to Seekers, which gets me a splat at least, but that's just nonsense from the E-litre 3K. So it goes.

An Echolocator isn't going to make me bolder, but finally I get an intentional splat. I send the E-litre 3K packing too, for small values of 'packing', and try not to give chase. But I move to press the Tower, and kinda have some small success, I suppose.

Another route, albeit one I have to announce with a Seeker. But I get up and behind the green team, although I notice three are being sent back to base when I get close, and I don't quite react quickly enough when the first inkling comes my way. It would be the super-quick Carbon Roller too.

There's not much you can do when Echolocated in the opponents' ink, so at least I splat the Carbon Roller when I am inevitably splatted myself. And on my return, I get inky revenge on the E-litre 3K. I maybe make a mess of the Roller flick, but I persevere with the rolling, and get the Squish. How embarrassing.

The second squish doesn't quite work, but even one is a rarity. I come back to reclaim some turf, when I see the E-litre 3K being a nuisance again. This splat is more straightforward, and I suppose he mistimed his appearance. Of course, I fall foul to the Carbon Roller, but that's okay.

We finally get some good time on the Tower. It's a bit late, but with some continued inky pressure and a few decent splats, it gives us hope for snatching the battle in extra time. And the target we need to reach isn't quite so far as I thought!

Not only did I think I was definitely splatted a couple of times, but when the battle ends I think the other team have regained control of the Tower. But, no, we've taken the lead! Great job, everyone!

Caution pays off in Tower Control (5-2, Carbon Roller Deco)

10th April 2017 – 7.00 am

It's not the best-aimed Seeker I've thrown at the start of a Kelp Dome battle, but it hits the ramp well enough to ink a path over for me. This is not a cautious route, it has to be said, and actually quite aggressive. But once over the top, with green ink ahead, I take a bit more care.

I only survive the Splatterscope's attentions thanks to pressure from my squidmates from behind, and I probably don't help at all for the first thirty seconds. I should try to do better from now on.

I squid around the side, past a Beakon I probably should have used, and bide my time as a Splash Wall bars my way. The inkling behind it doesn't come to me, and the Tower is moving away, so I head over to spring a surprise splat from behind.

A squidmate beats me to the splat, and I bump my squiddy head when being too clever in trying to get on to the Tower, so once again I sit and watch. My time comes, and I pounce from above, only to hit the new Splash Wall a couple of times. Thankfully, the third hit catches the inkling.

I press on to support the Tower, but am blissfully unaware of it heading in the wrong direction from the moment I jumped off the central column. This and my aim is why I'm back in A Rank, I'm sure. But I get heading back in the right direction, get a splat, and start supporting the Tower properly.

Sneaking around the back finds some inklings not expecting me. One gets an inky back, but stays standing, the other I splat properly, relieving some long-range pressure from my squidmates. Dropping down, a Seeker slides past, along with the tell-tale sign of a squid. I splat the Carbon Roller too, and the Tower trundles on to give us the lead.

My Carbon flick isn't quite good enough to splat the next inkling before they can transform in to a Kraken, which then sends me back to base, but the Tower keeps on moving. I return to provide a bit more support, although I suspect my squidmates have it all in hand. Even so, having feet on the Tower as we reach the goal is a good feeling.

Being A-class in A Rank Rainmaker (9-5, Carbon Roller Deco)

9th April 2017 – 7.00 pm

This has been another big losing streak. From the middle of S Rank, a brief will-I/won't-I in A+, and down to A Rank. It's just been one of those weeks. Well, let's see if I can have some fun with my new almost-favourite weapon, the Carbon Roller Deco.

I don't launch a Seeker at the start of this battle, as getting to the middle hasn't worked so well so far, even if I still think loosing a Seeker isn't such a bad thing to do. Instead, I opt for my Tri-slosher route, around the side to try to get behind the other team. It's effective, if only because my squidmates have secured the area already.

The early lead goes to us, even if I am not being effective yet. At least I spot and stop the Rainmaker trying to make an inkless break for it around the side. I don't go on to greater things, though, unlike my opposite number. Ah, Marie, I thought you preferred a charger.

A hilarious failure in jumping gets me in the sights of a Squiffer, no doubt jumped to the Beakon I was trying to find. My Ninja Squid gets me out of trouble and in to good position, but I fumble with my Roller and let her super-jump clear. Maybe this is why I am back in A Rank.

I make the jump next time, and although I don't get an elevated splat, a bit of perseverance bags me one near the Rainmaker, to the happiness of a squidmate. My Seeker Rush makes short work of the Rainmaker's shield, but if only it would do the same of a Kraken. I was played for a sucker!

I dunno what the Squiffer's aiming at, the Rainmaker is heading in the other direction. So I should be going that way too, really, but the Squiffer's right there! Thankfully, maybe, a Roller sends me back to base so I can focus in the right place.

Or maybe I'll head off to flank again. Three attempts to splat the Carbon Roller. I would say I need more practice, but I also think I should be playing less. Which is it? Whichever it is, I still can get some sweet splats, as shown by going around side again, and catching two inklings a bit too close to each other. Nice!

I roll towards the podium, ink one side, and splat a third inkling a moment before being splatted myself. But my squidmates are right behind me, to provide splatting support and carrying the Rainmaker. The inked podium is there and waiting, and we get the dunk! Woomy!

Always have a bubbler ready in Rainmaker (9-6, Tri-slosher)

9th April 2017 – 7.00 am

I feel I've neglected the Tri-slosher a bit with my new-found like of the Carbon Roller Deco, so I am trying to split my time between the two weapons more. I can feel a bit more aggressive with the Tri-slosher, not being quite so reliant on turf control, but holy crap those first two splats are a little brutal.

The first is just bad timing. The second is bad timing and bad placement. The Rainmaker had no idea I was there, and was just aiming to come along the route I was on. So it goes. We also have an early deficit to overcome. Getting hit by a Seeker Rush does nothing for my confidence, though, as well as making me miss the Carbon Roller.

I decide to go skirmishing, to see what disruption I can cause. Hopefully it helps the team too. I squid around the side and up around to the back, where the Splatterscope retreats and almost certainly thinks she has an easy splat as I run straight towards her. But I have a Bubbler ready.

I doubt inking the podium helps right now, but some pressure is taken off our team. I go back to be more active in my support, and get blasted by a Luna Blaster who seems to have ESP. Probably just good awareness. I hope to keep improving that.

Going around the other side sneaks me behind the other team, if only by virtue of them being so far up the map with excellent turf control. This is a tough battle. But I get a good splat from behind and, when spying the charger's ink trail, am happy to see my Bubbler is charged again.

I slosh ink down to splat the Rainmaker too, but run out of ink to get the super-jumper who lands a second later. I think I've lost him, but a handy Echolocator finds him again, and my Tri-slosher lands the ink to splat him too. I think the Roller is going to jump in to my bucket, but he goes around. No problem, as I have the high ground. Okay, this is better.

Better for me, not for us and the Rainmaker. But there's still time. I spy the charger, but her Killer Wail denies me access. I wander around, help stop the Rainmaker, and turn back, where a wall lets me sneak up on the Splatterscope, once more with a Bubbler ready. I doubt she likes seeing me at this point.

Holy ambush! I should stick to skirmishing in this battle. I use my Bubbler on the Luna Blaster I happen across, which must make the Splatterscope happy as I approach her the next time. Well, happier, but maybe not happy, as I still splat her.

I stumble up a wall to confront some inklings as the timer runs down, and I think we're a little hard done by. Only a few steps needed to take, the Rainmaker available, and a squidmate picks it up just as the clock hits zero. No extra time, no final chance. Ah well, it turned out to be a fun battle!

From green to pink in Splat Zones (10-7, Tri-slosher)

8th April 2017 – 7.00 pm

Look at me being a team player! I even get a 'Nice! for splatting an inkling. That's encouraging! I soon run in to some ink, though, and do it again. And with not only the Splat Zones entirely green, but most of the turf around them, our chances in the battle look bleak.

After a couple of times heading directly out of our base in to waiting green inklings, I decide that an alternative route needs to be sought. Around the long way seems like the best choice, even if it takes me away from the objective. Actually, it's because it takes me away from the objective that it seems like a safer route.

I get outside the base safely and can start sloshing ink around. It's not much to start with, but it gives us some free movement, and charges my Bubbler in time for when I attract green attention. I can keep moving, my squidmates are all around and inking everywhere, and we push back the green ink.

More movement and inking and we control the Splat Zones. The Splat Zones and beyond. Yep, that deserves a 'Nice!' too! Now the green team is feeling the pressure, which if we keep our cool will work in our favour. Personally, I quite enjoy biding my time to splat the Inkstriker, before returning to re-ink the Splat Zones.

Now there is purple ink everywhere! We hold the turf well, pushing as high as we can, and keeping the green inklings held back quite effectively. I get a few good splats, and by the time I start trading splats again it no longer matters. There's the smallest of interludes, but the counter ticks down to complete our knockout victory. Woomy!

From splatted to splatter in Splat Zones (14-6, Tri-slosher)

8th April 2017 – 7.00 am

Splat Zones on Piranha Pit, with a Splatterscope on the other team, and I don't immediately head pell mell for the charger? Yes, I'm playing the objective! Long may it last. Ah, there we go. I spy the charger and think I am in a good position. But the Splatterscope is quite good, so I should probably watch my step.

At least on the next encounter I have my Bubbler ready, but the Splatterscope is good and easily avoids me. Never mind, more inking of turf is good! And then I am back where I started, with the Splatterscope having enough Strength-up kit to splat me in under a second. I swear I'll learn the next time.

Hey, we take the lead! I probably helped. I get a nice sloshing splat, and am feeling good for about two seconds, and the Splatterscope gets an angle that makes me a little bit salty. But these things happen. Back to the action, and keeping things yellow!

Avoiding the attention of the Splatterscope drops me behind a Dual Squelcher, and from there I get to a good position to splat an inkling on a high perch. To be honest, if they had stayed up on the box my Tri-slosher wouldn't reach, as I jumped to get the first hit, so I got nicely lucky. Luckier still, I am next to the Splatterscope whose focus is tunnel-visioned ahead of her. Inky vengeance is mine!

The Splat Zones are ours again too! It's a shame my jump is too vigorous, but it's good defence from the Aerospray. I find myself on the defensive for a bit, with some long-range ink coming my way, and as I push ahead an Echolocator hits me. That doesn't stop me getting a decent jump-and-slosh splat on the Splatterscope, though.

I retreat briefly to avoid danger, and return with plenty of ink in my bucket and a bit of luck to get some more splats. With the inklings out of the way, the Splat Zones can be inked again, and it looks like our turning the battle around is making the purple team feel pressured. The Splatterscope wasn't missing those shots earlier in the battle.

Of course, my own confidence gets the better of me too, but at least I don't follow that by charging in to an Inkzooka. A Splat Bomb Rush is another matter. As the clock counts down, the purple team make a last push and control the Splat Zones, but they leave their own undefended, and a late Echolocator lets us splat them all to let us recapture ours, and the battle ends in normal time. Woomy!

Rolling around the Splat Zones (10-3, Carbon Roller Deco)

7th April 2017 – 7.00 pm

The battles move to Splat Zones, but I stick with the Carbon Roller Deco. The Warehouse is where I had my first decent Carbon Roller battle, so I'm hoping lightning will strike twice. At least during one of my matches.

Seekers and rolling are good for movement and inking turf, and I practice some caution by staying back at the start of the battle, until enough turf has been covered for Ninja Squidding to be effective. We lose the Splat Zones as squidmates are splatted, but I keep some turf inked to help their return.

That's a nice dodge of the Killer Wail in the middle of a Seeker Rush, and I manage to keep the Seekers flying. I don't think they can hit the inkling on the ledge, but good for them for trying! I use the ink to move ahead, and splat a Tri-slosher I recognise. Hi Kelly! Sorry about that.

I wait under a ledge, wondering if the inklings will drop down this way, but when the Echolocator wears off realise that I can use my time better elsewhere. Splatting and inking! And off up the side with me, where I pause in case my trail has been spotted. And pause a bit more, when ink flies my way, not quite hiding properly.

Once the threat seems gone, I move ahead, sneaking under a Splash Wall for a splat, and moving up and around to see if I can catch any inklings off-guard on a perch. Nope! They've all moved on, because they control the Splat Zones. Oops. I try to make amends, but mess around at the bottom of a crate as we lose the lead. Time to get it together.

A Seeker Rush seems like a good idea, but I react a bit too slow to the Inkstriking inkling in the background. That's fine, I'll just roll over the new teal ink instead. I try to help keep the Zones orange, but my squidding feels pretty aimless. I'm almost thankful that the Gal splats me back to base. Not the second time, though.

Another trip right around the back misses another Inkstrike launch, and again it is dropping back down to ground that finds the action. Just in time to help us retake the lead! There are only seconds to go too, making it relatively simple to keep control for the victory.

Always forwards in Rainmaker (13-8, Carbon Roller Deco)

7th April 2017 – 7.00 am

Time for some quick Carbon Roller Deco fun before the battle modes change. The Seekers help us get to the centre of Arowana Mall nice and quickly, and I sneak past the Rainmaker to gives us an early advantage. That jump-splat would have been legendary, I reckon.

Back along the side corridor to ink some turf for more options, and not only flick over the head of a fellow Roller, but get a super-jumping squidmate in to the same position. Sorry about that. But the rest of our team is well ahead of us. We should join them.

I drop next to the Rainmaker and feel the pressure of that final ridge again. Whilst I can't slosh like the Tri-slosher, I have my Seekers. They won't be enough, and I dare to squid over the top, where a yellow inkling gets distracted by the Rainmaker. We lose the Rainmaker, but I clear the path for now, albeit a little close to a Suction Bomb Rush.

We look to have a constant presence near the podium, and it makes sense to keep that going. I keep an eye out for the Rainmaker, but lose track of it, so ink the way ahead. But there it is, above us! I don't think we can get that easily.

Okay, it was pretty easy, thanks to a Seeker and distracted inkling. But I get cocky, as often happens, and think I can outrange a Splattershot. Of course I can't! At least the Rainmaker is not up here any more. It's not gone far either, so it's right back in to the action. And I only stay there thanks to a squidmate taking the Inkzooka hit. I'd better get out of trouble.

Despite my good manoeuvring, my flicking lets me down a little again. It wasn't an easy shot, because of the jump, range, and steep ramp, but it would have been amazing, right? The lucky splat makes up for it a bit, but squidding in to a Splat Bomb was a bit careless.

I cleverly wait on a wall to splat the Rainmaker, but my brilliance is spoilt by a squidmate being more direct. No problem! Even better, when I can't get away from a Suction Bomb, I'm not actually carrying the Rainmaker. It takes me a few seconds to work that one out.

More super-jumping! More splatty confusion! I return as the battle enters extra time, the yellow team making one final push. Their victory is unlikely, but nothing can be taken for granted. I send a Seeker up the middle, but sensibly send myself around the side, and am able to dodge a blast and splat the Rainmaker to give us the victory. Woomy!
