Getting the runaround in Splat Zones (12-3, Tri-slosher)

31st May 2017 – 7.00 pm

Mmm, an E-litre 3K on Moray Towers. Will I be target practice for him, or can I sneak around him? I go for the sneaky option, naturally, but find no E-litre 3K when I get to the normal perch. There is another inkling, though, and an active Echolocator drops another in to my lap when I have a Bubbler ready. Thanks, squidmate!

I get above the green Splat Zone, with a squidmate, and spy the E-litre 3K. I move down to go for the splat, but he moves on and I get distracted. At least I don't engage the shooter directly, but use my Tri-slosher to its advantage. I don't get that splat, but I stay in a good position, and when the E-litre 3K returns I move positively. Even with an Echolocator on me, I come out on top.

Getting back to ink the Splat Zones gets the job done, for a moment, but I am blindsided and don't react quickly enough. That lets me go back to ink our own Splat Zone for a bit. I am a bit disappointed that my Tri-slosher didn't quite protect me, but so it goes. The Splat Zones are shared, the wrong colour on each.

I go back to the same spot, taking care not to run in to any hiding inkling, and nearly succumb to an Inkstrike. That makes everything green long enough for us to lose the lead. I get back to sloshing our Splat Zone, and see an active inkling thwarting me below. Running out of ink is a problem, so I pop my Bubbler to refill my tank, dropping down to be more confrontational. It goes well.

Some inky pressure comes my way, so I press forwards without looking back. A squidmate is taking care of the other Splat Zone, so I lend a hand, moving up to apply some of our own pressure. The E-litre 3K is further up, and cannot snap off a strong enough shot at me, giving me opportunity to ink more turf, the Splat Zone, and charge my Bubbler again.

I use the Bubbler as I push higher, the green laser of the E-litre 3K on me. I perhaps push my luck as I get pushed back by a shooter, but the shooter pushes her luck more, and I follow up by splatting the E-litre 3K too. I'm glad he's not as skilled with Burst Bombs as some other E-litre 3K users I've encountered.

I recapture the green Splat Zone, but not for long, and pressure comes on two fronts. The E-litre 3K is back, and an Inkstrike comes rushing in. The E-litre 3K is not looking for me, letting me pounce, but we lose control of the Splat Zones, which seems more important. I circle back up and help a squidmate lower down with the Splat Zone, but again the E-litre 3K is back. Neither of us wants a direct confrontation, and I lose my target. I do the sensible thing and back right off, which happily finds my target again, and turns the Splat Zone purple. Nice!

Another circle splats the returning E-litre 3K, who I increasingly think is learning the weapon, and head back to the Splat Zone, dropping in to it to be more effective. I splat one incoming inkling, lose track of another, and can do little more than watch as we enter a grace period of extra time without control of the Splat Zones. It was a good battle, but we just lacked a bit of ink in the right places.

Let's go round again in Splat Zones (9-2, Tri-slosher)

31st May 2017 – 7.00 am

That Hydra Splatling may cause problems for us, but first things first: ink our own Splat Zone. With that done, it's straight to the other side, down the side route. But no one's there. No matter, I can go upwards and slosh down on the other Splat Zone from above. The blue team have the same idea, though, and our Splat Zone is neutralised as I do the same to theirs. At least we're not losing yet.

We start losing when I hear Suction Bombs being thrown my way, and feel I should back off a bit. I do a circle and see very little blue ink where I was standing, so maybe I was over-cautious, but I'm unsplatted and back to neutralise the blue Splat Zone. I capture it too, as my squidmates recapture our Splat Zone, and we take the lead back. This upsets the blue team, but their Killer Wail is too late to catch me.

I circle down to slosh some ink over all the blue, and have a Bubbler ready when blue pressure comes my way. A pair of us clear the threats from the blue Splat Zone and make it more yellow all around. I take the short-cut back up above the Splat Zone and, with not much else to do, make another circuit.

Blue inklings return to the Splat Zone, but right underneath my Tri-slosher. I don't even hear the splat from up here. I go around another time, to make even more turf yellow, and with the help of a Bubbler I splat two more blue inklings coming back, plus another super-jumping to above the Splat Zone, and one accidentally below me. This is going quite well.

I head upwards and, with few blue inklings active, cheekily wait for their return. I do push my luck, though. But coming back myself lets me ink above our own Splat Zone, and the Splat Zone itself, which needs a bit of attention. I keep the Splat Zone as yellow as I can, and take a dive as a Killer Wail comes in. Getting snagged on a railing was not part of the plan.

Thirty seconds left, and I head along the route I created at the start. I spy the Hydra Splatling holding station on our own perch, causing problems and inking our Splat Zone, and start heading towards him, but don't quite get there. The battle is already won! That was some good Splat Zone control.

Stealing splats in Splat Zones (5-0, Tri-slosher)

30th May 2017 – 7.00 pm

There's no one coming down the corridor as I head around the side, so I keep going, hoping to flank some orange inklings. I don't see any, though, not even when one is soon reappearing at their base. I turn around to look for inklings with a fresh height advantage, but still see none, and my diversion has cost us control of the Splat Zones. No problem, I'm approaching them now.

My squidmates capture the Splat Zones, and I see inklings here and there, so I drop down to see if I can contribute. My Bubbler is ready, which helps, and I add a tiny bit of ink to a splat that my squidmate pushes my way. I share my Bubbler with him as thanks. Circling around the back of the crate gets another splat that's perhaps not best contributed to me, as my slosh was minor compared to the Splat Bomb. I need the help occasionally.

I get what looks like a good Disruptor throw, but it doesn't quite work against the Kraken. I back off and hide from the Kraken, or think I do, at least, as changing my view shows me just resting against a block. It's good that I wasn't the Kraken's target. An Inkstrike pushes me away from the Splat Zones, but a trip around the back doesn't find anything, so I pull myself back again.

I help keep the Splat Zones inked for a bit, pushing forwards to avoid the Inkzooka, but tempted back by an inkling who disappears. But the Splat Zones turn teal again, which is the main thing. I head backwards for a bit, covering over some orange ink to make our movement easier, and return to manoeuvre around and through the Splat Zones, keeping them inked and finding the occasional splat.

I see another target ahead of me, and move to flank them, but before I get there the battle ends. That was quick! Good work by my squidmates.

Annoying the E-litre 3K in Splat Zones (7-2, Tri-slosher)

30th May 2017 – 7.00 am

I really like Moray Towers, particularly with a Tri-slosher in my hands. I quite like Moray Towers Splat Zones too, even though it can be challenging to cross the central area, particularly with a charger around. That E-litre 3K looks menacing too, as its range can more than cross the central area.

I am also trying not to get splatted too early these days, so I take the first ramp and jump the gap to be above our Splat Zone, from where I can slosh ink down in relative safety to begin with. With a good Disruptor throw ahead of me, slowing down a bold teal inkling, I drop down to, well, find the Suction Bomb neatly thrown in to our Splat Zone.

I decide to be more direct as I return, dropping down quickly and hitting the hidden ledge. I see an inkling coming my way and so I'm prepared for the splat, and it seems the teal Splat Zone is now undefended. I capture it for us, taking some pressure off our own Splat Zone. From there, I head up the side route, and think about going higher, but look for the E-litre 3K on his perch. I get there seconds before a Killer Wail looks for him too.

From the E-litre 3K, I head up. A teal inkling is inking the Splat Zone from one of the grates, which makes it safer for me to approach. My sloshing doesn't quite do the job, but I have a Bubbler to back me up. And with the Splat Zones purple again, I am under pressure from behind. I am a bit clumsy in my approach and sloshing, but the E-litre 3K is thankfully clumsier.

I am pursued as I was pursuing, but there are so many ledges and drops on Moray Towers I can get away. My reactions are poor when my chaser goes after a squidmate, but my sloshes reach out below me to finish the splat. Now I cheekily await for the E-litre 3K. Badly, as it turns out, as I give my position away, but I still somehow come away unsplatted.

I move up and help recover the Splat Zone, now with a charged Bubbler, which encourages me to find the E-litre 3K again, who is probably coming back by now. There he is, and there he goes. But my luck runs out, when I don't think of a Disruptor soon enough, then miss my throw, and run in to too much ink.

I think we've done enough, though. Before I get far from our base, the battle is won. Woomy!

Getting close in Rainmaker (10-5, Carbon Roller Deco)

29th May 2017 – 7.00 pm

That's a lucky Seeker splat at the start of the battle. I'm not even sure who it hit or where. Backing that up with a second splat to protect me and the Rainmaker is happy bonus. I push forwards with another Seeker, to ink a line for the Rainmaker, and push higher when it looks like we're making progress. I hit resistance soon enough, but we've made a pretty good start.

I really confuse myself when trying to track and catch up with the teal team's first push. They are heading around the side, up in to our side corridor, and I don't know if I can flank them quickly enough, or get up and around to confront them directly. I end up super-jumping back to base, after fiddling for a bit, clearly forgetting about the inkable block just next to me, offering jump access to the corridor. Oops. Thankfully, my squidmates are in a better position.

The dilemma remains, but with time on my side. And with a Splash wall in front of me, I go around. One inkling is caught on the block, another can't get away in time, and the Rainmaker is taken out by a squidmate. A teal inkling super-jumping in is in for a shock too. We get another go with the Rainmaker.

An attempt to flank us runs straight in to my Roller, and with every angle looking to be covered I hang back to shake off the Echolocator and get ink for Seekers. The next push doesn't get too far, though, and we are on the wrong end of a Seeker Rush. The Rainmaker's going nowhere though, so again I wait for support before failing to grab the Rainmaker. But that's okay. I go a different way, a little distracted, and actually remember the inkable block to go to help directly. If only I could have inked it more efficiently.

Never run headlong in to a Seeker Rush or the Rainmaker. I should remember this more often. It helps me stay unsplatted, as well as sending me to where an attempt at flanking is happening again. I even stay out of range of the Rainmaker's Shield bursting, splat the Rainmaker, and stay out of range again. Is this personal improvement? I hope so! I do a little dance with a Gal before he runs off to be more help elsewhere, but I catch up and help defend.

All looks clear as a squidmate grabs the Rainmaker, and he squids away at speed. I'm a little behind, but that's good, as I catch the Carbon Roller mid-Seeker Rush, giving us a clearer path ahead. By the time I'm with the Rainmaker, he's almost on the podium. That's worth a 'Nice!', even prematurely, as this almost certainly wins us the battle. Half a minute to go, and we really only need to defend successfully.

The Rainmaker doesn't get close to us, my squidmates being nicely in control, and an Inkstrike and my Seeker Rush bursts the Rainmaker shield with less than ten seconds to go. Rather than use Seekers, I squid ahead to grab the Rainmaker, to better make sure of the battle. And indeed the battle ends on time with us in control. Woomy!

Invinci-squids in Rainmaker (8-7, Carbon Roller Deco)

29th May 2017 – 7.00 am

There's a little flurry of activity around the Rainmaker as always at the start of the battle. I mostly hang back, not wanting to get splatted for nothing, until I see a Splat Roller hide behind the boxes. I ninja squid the other way and flick some ink, getting two partial hits but not splat. It happens, I suppose.

I retreat as the Roller becomes a Kraken, and stop retreating to avoid a Killer Wail. I return ostensibly to support the Rainmaker, but I don't get there in time, so I try to clear the area of inklings. Another good flick gets me nothing, and neither do another two partial hits. I'm getting suspicious now.

If I can't splat squids, I take the opportunity to run with the Rainmaker. A Splat Charger inks a path for me up the block to the side, but when I get up there I'm shown that the Splat Roller has no problem splatting me. I get back to position myself so that no one will get past me, but revise my policy when a Kraken comes my way. He can pass. The Rainmaker, though, shows that I can splat inklings. Good!

Naturally, my Carbon Roller can't squish an inkling in one go, but my reactions perhaps could have been better with the flick. Maybe as a result, but maybe not, we lose the lead. I return to hit the flank of the Rainmaker, where the orange inklings are super-jumping back to, hidden from the main view, getting myself a good pair of splats. I wasn't expecting the third to come in, unfortunately, but, now lacking support, he gets splatted by the Rainmaker's Shield.

With their eagerness to push, the orange team is wiped and we get another chance with the Rainmaker. I hold back a little, though, making it harder for the orange team to move around our base and easier for us. I catch up and finally get a decent flick on a Roller, but not the one that was resistant earlier. He rolls over me from the side almost immediately. At least a Seeker of mine splats the Rainmaker.

I head down the side to flank the orange team, but pause to support my squidmates. And, hey, I splat the awkward Splat Roller! Okay, we'll all normal squids after all. Spurred on by this knowledge, I probably make a mistake in bursting the Rainmaker's Shield when I'm by myself, compounded by getting splatted. I can do better. Judging by my positioning to let the Rainmaker's Shield get burst, maybe I can't do better.

I probably think I'm doing something good by going right around the edge, but I dunno what. At least I find the Rainmaker and help support it before anything goes wrong. Sneaking under the Kraken is a neat trick, and better than squidding in to a Splat Roller's flick. No, I'm sure I can do better, I just need to focus.

There's not much time left to show what I can do. Getting to the centre of the map and launching an inconsequential Seeker isn't really something for the highlight reel. Oh well, there are more battles to be had.

Rollers and chargers in Rainmaker (10-6, Carbon Roller Deco)

28th May 2017 – 7.00 pm

This is an interesting pair of team compositions. Rollers and chargers, with one shooter on our team. It's not really what I'd expect to see in Rainmaker, but I'm sure we can make it work. My first splat is mutual, which perhaps I should have made sure of, but flicking between boxes is going to negate some of my ink.

Do those two chargers sniff me out? What's going on there? No one else is around me, and I am hidden in the ink. Thankfully, I make it clear, and even somehow get the upper hand on another Roller whilst I am Echolocated. But something is probably happening with the Rainmaker. As it turns out, the teal team has it and has taken the lead. I'm asleep here.

I turn around to try to support the team, but end up sitting in the middle of the map playing with one of the chargers. Maybe that's taking some pressure off the Rainmaker, but I dunno. Either way, my timing to turn back is pretty good, as I am there to support our next push directly. A sneaky squid waits for us up on the ledge, but I take one for the team and manage to squeeze out a Seeker that lets the Rainmaker continue.

I head back the same way, where the Rainmaker is available but no one really wants to pick it up. Me neither, but having me ahead and somehow still unsplatted after bumping in to a charger encourages a squidmate to pick it up and run. And run she does, almost all the way to the podium! She doesn't quite make it, and maybe I could have inked the podium for her instead of turning to focus on a Roller below, but we have a really strong lead.

We also have the Rainmaker right next to the podium, just not really the ink to burst its shield. That's okay, the teal team can do it for us. The podium shields me from the burst, and I try to claim a sneaky dunk, but I'm not fooling anyone. When the teal team makes their next push, I see our charger has the corridor covered from our side, so it makes more sense for me to head around the back. It works out well.

Trying to surprise a charger doesn't work out quite as well, being squished for having to flick twice. I get my aim right the next time, and in a bigger pool of teal ink, but not on the second inkling, who Burst Bombs me back to base. I look to sneak around the side afterwards, but it feels a bit risky when Echolocated, and circle back around.

We are in defence mode at this point, it seems. I quite like this. We are pushing the teal team back, but without being unsporting by taking the Rainmaker somewhere inaccessible. And with a few seconds left, a squidmate grabs it to make sure we aren't caught out, letting us end the battle safe and secure. Woomy!

Seeking here and there in Rainmaker (15-7, Carbon Roller Deco)

28th May 2017 – 7.00 am

After a cautious start, I think I make a decent pounce at a target, but my flicking either isn't quite good enough, or an inkling kitted out for run speed is just a bit too quick for me. I pick my moment well on my return, though, even if it takes a couple of attempts, to splat the Rainmaker. We recover it and I push ahead, but again I fall foul of the run-speed inkling, who rather suspiciously tip-toes around a Seeker by millimetres.

The turf near our podium hasn't been touched yet, and we could probably use a speedy exit from our base in this direction too. I stop half-way to launch a cheeky Seeker, which cheekily catches the Rainmaker. But as I dive down to press this minor advantage, I am hit with an Echolocator, and soon after a .52 Gal Deco when I have nowhere to hide.

I sensibly pause as the Rainmaker resets with one of our Killer Wails blasting over it, and get in to a good position to splat the Splatling with a lucky Seeker. But staying in that good spot just makes me a target in return. The Rainmaker stays in roughly the same position, so I return in roughly the same manner. My Seeker does the trick again, and although the Rainmaker squids by, I catch up and help my squidmates with the cross-fire.

Another Echolocator hits, making me a target, but thankfully not splatted. I squid around until I shake it off, and press forwards with the Rainmaker. Deja vu with the Seeker Rush and inkling diving down, but this time I'm ready with a flick of my Roller, allowing me to survive for a few seconds longer. But as one Seeker splats me, one of mine splats back. And all that ink and support lets our Rainmaker carrier take the lead!

How hard is it to get up an inked wall? Pretty tricky, sometimes. I suppose it lets all the green team get past me, so by the time I am up and over I have some targets to surprise, one more than the other. The Rainmaker has now shifted to the other side of the map, so my focus shifts with it. I try to hide from the green team, as it looks like they are coming my way, but am pushed back until I am ousted. Despite this, I get lucky to close with the Splatling and get a splat.

I get away from the green ink and return to throw some purple around. Once more, a Seeker from the side is unexpected, and a bit of height keeps me relatively safe. A Killer Wail keeps the green Rainmaker carrier safe as the battle enters extra time, and although I can't catch up to end the battle, my squidmates have it covered. Woomy!

Mostly cautious sloshing in Tower Control (11-4, Tri-slosher)

27th May 2017 – 7.00 pm

I don't want to press too hard in this battle, as recent battles have just seen me get splatted quickly when it could have been avoided. Hanging back and using my weapons sensibly works quite well to start with, even if it doesn't make us any positive progress with the Tower. I move forwards only when my Bubbler is ready, which keeps me safe, and bug out when it runs out.

I continue with the push as squidmates are riding the Tower, but get rather embroiled in at least one Bomb Rush, and this time I don't have a Bubbler to save me. My Disruptor throwing still needs a bit of work, but I think I'm getting the hang of being egregiously splatted by .96 Gals. My Disruptor throws get better on my return, including one on the .96 Gal, which slows him down enough for me to be confident in pouncing.

I ink some turf as the Tower returns to its central point, and splat the Gal again, thanks to both my bucket and Bubbler. As I drop down to help support my squidmates, I am almost shepherded around the back, which isn't exactly being cautious, but I can roll with it. Doing so splats me the Gal again, which is fun, so I think about going around for another go.

Not around the back this time, but a more direct route, to support the Tower as it trundles forwards. I don't stop the purple team clearing the Tower, but I get a couple of splats to help us make another push. This time I return around the back, but it seems a bit dangerous and pointless when the purple team recover the Tower, so head back to the centre of the office.

My Bubbler's ready again! That emboldens my spirit, and once again I thrust myself forwards in to trouble, getting a splat out of it and keeping another inkling at bay. We still aren't consistently managing to push the Tower forwards, but we are kinda stopping it from retreating too far. I try to be cautious as I head around the side again, and make my move when an Echolocator shows me where the purple team is. But my maths isn't great, and I should have realised one inkling wasn't highlighted.

We make one more attempt to get the lead as the seconds tick down, but again we don't get too far. We get one last attempt, as the battle enters extra time, so I ignore the risk of super-jumping on to the Tower and jump ahead to help keep the push going. It doesn't last long.

Holding back and splatting in Tower Control (8-4, Hero Charger Replica)

27th May 2017 – 7.00 am

I hold back at our rotating platform at the start of this Tower Control battle, to support my squidmates from a position of relative safety. I lack a touch of aim and a little bit of range to do much but keep turf inked, but I dodge an Inkstrike and destroy a Sprinkler. I think a bit of height might help, but not when I'm now being actively targeted.

I drop down and manage to splat a charger aiming for me, and let loose a Splat Bomb Rush to deter a Dual Squelcher who comes around the corner. He just disappears to target me with a Killer Wail. I feel a need to retreat, and do what I can from a bit further back. Being so pressed back, the Tower is free for the teal team to push a bit. We still have the lead, though, which my squidmates skilfully got whilst I was on my initial perch. Nice!

The pest is pushed back, the Tower reclaimed, and as my squidmates make a fresh push I follow behind. I get a splat to take a bit of pressure of the Tower, and try to use a fresh Splat Bomb Rush to clear the Tower when the teal team reclaim it, but step a bit too close to an Inkstrike.

I try a different perch on my return, but I am spotted and repelled, a couple of rolled Splat Bombs not quite being timed well enough. Back to our main area, particularly with the teal team pushing the Tower, and I somehow get a really nice splat on an inkling who had just launched in Inkstrike. I ink some turf after that, but maybe I should be focussing on the Tower.

We try to clear the inklings off the Tower as it comes towards us, and although we get the splats, there is enough presence on the Tower to push it past our lead. Once there are no more super-jumpers, I squid on to the Tower, as does a squidmate, and we start moving the Tower in the right direction. I leap off to provide support from range, but end up moving backwards a bit.

There are tussles over the Tower, and I get a bit too close to be effective, and my aim with Splat Bombs is a little rusty to rely on. I get splatted back to base with under twenty seconds to go and the teal team advancing their lead. I try to help clear the Tower, knowing that an extra-time push would be unlikely, but we get overwhelmed in the last few seconds.
